Dear Matthew, yes, of course. This is what we know: the painting was bought from the Rubens Estate by king Philips IV, together with two other paintings by Van Dyck that are now in the Prado. First, it hung in the Escorial palace, but in 1656 Velásquez chose it for the Escorial convent where it hung in the sacristy. The owners thereafter were: King Joseph Bonaparte, Marshal Soult, Buchanan, Matthew Anderson, Henry Spencer Lucy, Fairfax Lucy, Christie's London, Art dealer S&R Rosenberg, David Bingham, Willem van der Vorm. The painting is in the museum as a long term loan from the Van der Vorm Foundation. At this moment we have a small presentation of works from the Van der Vorm collection in the new depot in which Hieronymus is a central piece. I hope this is helpful. Kind regards, Els

I work as a collections assistant at Charlecote Park in Warwickshire England, which is part of the National Trust. I am doing some research into some of the paintings the Lucy family had on display. In 1891 the family stated they owned St Jerome by Van Dyck. The dimensions were described as 66 x 50. I was wondering if this is the painting of Saint Jerome you have?

Dear Matthew, Yes, the St Jerome by Van Dyck in the Boijmans collection has the Lucy family in its provenance: first Henry Spencer Lucy and then Fairfax Lucy. If you want I can send you the complete provenance (going back to Peter Paul Rubens). By the way, the dimensions of the painting are 165 x 130 cm. I suppose the dimensions that you found are in inches? Kind regards, Els
